There’s a reason flowering cherry trees are such a favourite in UK gardens. As spring gets going, few trees are able to put on a show quite like it, with its soft pink or white blossoms, light fragrance, and that unmistakable feeling that the season’s properly arrived. It’s therefore to no surprise they’ve become one of the most popular choices in UK gardens. Whether you’ve got a large plot or a compact courtyard, there’s usually a cherry tree that fits.
Smaller varieties are especially useful if space is limited and many stay neat and manageable while still offering the same striking blossom and graceful form. Weeping cherries in particular add a soft, cascading shape that works well in borders or as a focal point. The prunus family includes a wide range of flowering cherries, from delicate Japanese types to the tougher British-grown trees that cope well with our ever-changeable weather.
On the whole. Cherry Trees are fairly low maintenance once established. Most do best in full sun and prefer a spot that’s sheltered from strong winds as this helps to protect the blossom and encourages a longer flowering period. Soil-wise, they’re not overly fussy and as long as you’ve got some decent drainage, they’ll usually remain happy.
If you’re thinking of adding one to your garden, it’s worth browsing what’s available and seeing what suits your space. Some are upright and some are spreading, but they all bring a sense of calm and beauty when they come into flower. There’s a quiet reliability to cherry trees and they don’t ask for much but give back something quite spectacular year after year.
