Daphne odora is a tease, one waits anxiously for her little buds to appear and they remain poised, sensibly waiting for the weather to cheer up a little. Suddenly the air is filled with an intoxicating fragrance before you notice they have burst their buds.
Daphne is one of the most fragrant plants, sometimes blooming in December but generally they need some mild weather. A symbolism of Spring approaching.
Fairly hardy, Daphne do need protection so plant in a wind free, sunny sheltered position in a border or pot, near your front or back door so that you can enjoy their perfume. A sprig or two will fill a room with its lovely scent
Daphne is difficult to propagate, hence they are quite expensive but once settled they are well worth the cost as they give year-round pleasure although they are primarily loved for their early colour and glorious fragrance. They sometimes produce red berries later in the year. Neither flowers, leaves or berries should be eaten as they will give one a very sore tummy. Daphne, once settled resent transplanting so make sure you plant it in the right place.
Grow in sun or partial shade in a south or east facing sheltered position.
