Last week, we looked at planning ahead and choosing trees to fill your garden with beautiful autumn colour. This week, we’re looking a little further forward and thinking about plants that offer something special throughout the seasons.

As the leaves begin to fall, you may notice a few gaps or corners that could use a little more interest. A carefully chosen evergreen, colourful winter stems, spring blossom or home-grown fruit can transform the space and give you something new to enjoy throughout the year.

There’s More to a Garden Than Flowers

Flowers may become harder to find as winter approaches, but there are plenty of other ways to keep your garden interesting. Evergreen foliage, berries, colourful stems, attractive bark and beautiful shapes can all bring life to the garden.

A mixed native hedgerow is a particularly lovely choice. It can fill an awkward gap, create a softer and more natural boundary, and provide berries, shelter and safe nesting places for birds and other wildlife.

Over time, a native hedge becomes a little world of its own—changing with the seasons and giving you something new to notice throughout the year.

Tilia ‘Winter Orange’: A Bright Spot on Winter Days

Tilia cordata ‘Winter Orange’ is a beautiful small-leaved lime tree that really earns its place in the garden.

Its fresh green, heart-shaped leaves turn a warm golden yellow in autumn. Once they fall, vivid orange young stems are revealed, bringing a welcome splash of colour during winter.

It looks wonderful as a feature tree or planted in a row, particularly where the colourful stems can be seen against an evergreen background or pale winter sky. Plant it in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil.

Yew: A Traditional Evergreen Favourite

Yew is a handsome native evergreen with dense, dark green foliage that provides colour and structure throughout the year.

It can be grown as a hedge for privacy and shelter, clipped into a formal shape or left to develop naturally as a specimen tree. Its thick foliage also provides valuable cover for garden birds and other wildlife.

Slow-growing, hardy and easy to shape, Yew grows well in sun or shade and suits most well-drained soils, including chalky ground. It also makes a lovely dark green backdrop for pale bark, colourful winter stems and spring blossom.

Please remember that Yew is poisonous if eaten, so it may not be suitable for gardens where children, pets or grazing animals could reach it.

Scots Pine: A Native Tree Full of Character

There is something very special about a Scots Pine. This magnificent native evergreen has beautiful blue-green needles and distinctive orange-brown bark that becomes even more characterful with age.

Young trees have a neat, conical shape, gradually developing a broader crown as they mature. Scots Pine is a lovely choice for a larger garden, open space or woodland setting, where it can be given plenty of room to grow.

It is hardy, resilient and tolerant of poorer or sandy soils once established. It also provides year-round greenery and valuable shelter for wildlife.

Peach ‘Peregrine’: Home-Grown Peaches to Look Forward To

Peach ‘Peregrine’ is a lovely choice if you want a tree that is both beautiful and productive. Pretty pink blossom appears in spring, followed by sweet, juicy, white-fleshed peaches that are usually ready to enjoy in late summer.

It is self-fertile, so you only need one tree to produce fruit. For the best results, plant it in a warm, sunny and sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil.

Training it against a sunny, south-facing wall can provide the extra warmth and protection needed to help the fruit ripen beautifully. With its spring blossom and delicious late summer harvest, ‘Peregrine’ gives you plenty to look forward to.

Take a Look from Your Window

Here is a simple way to decide where your garden needs a little more winter interest: go indoors and look out through the windows you use most often.

Is there a corner that feels empty once the leaves have fallen? Would an evergreen give the garden more shape? Could some colourful stems brighten the view, or would a fragrant shrub make the walk to your front door a little lovelier?

Thinking about how the garden looks from inside can help you choose a spot where your new tree or shrub will be enjoyed every day—even when it is too chilly to spend long outdoors.

Plant Now and Enjoy the Seasons Ahead

Autumn is a wonderful time for planting. The cooler weather and naturally moist soil help new trees and shrubs begin settling into their new homes before spring arrives.

Container-grown plants can be planted throughout the year, provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. Give them a good drink after planting and keep an eye on the soil during any dry spells.

Whether you are adding an evergreen, planting a native hedgerow or simply bringing a little colour and fragrance to a forgotten corner, the smallest change can make your garden feel special throughout winter.
