Best trees and shrubs to plant for spring colour

As we leave 2022 behind and head into a new year, it’s always good to think ahead and consider what we can plant to bring colour to our gardens this Spring. Not only do these trees and shrubs enhance your garden with bright colours but they are also great for bringing structure and wildlife to gardens.

Spring flowering trees

Spring-blossoming trees provide beautiful colour as we head towards lighter nights and warmer weather. These flowering trees will help to brighten your garden in the next couple of months.

Flowering Cherry Accolade tree

This tree blossoms beautifully in Spring with clusters of deep pink buds that showcase double pale pink flowers. It is considered one of the most attractive early-flowering ornamental cherry trees. The Flowering Cherry Accolade tree is slender with a sparse canopy so doesn’t cause much shade and is perfect for enhancing small gardens. Not to mention they also look lovely in Autumn as they display a rich, bright red and orange colour.

If you’re after a flowering white option then Great White Cherry or Blushing Bride make a great alternative to enhance your garden with beautiful white blossoms.

Hawthorn 'Pauls Scarlet' tree

A spectacular-looking, spring blossom tree that produces deep, scarlet-pink, double flowers in May – usually when most of the other flowering trees have finished their floral displays.  The Hawthorn ‘Pauls’ Scarlet trees are extremely hardy and resilient and can thrive in nearly all locations such as coastal, exposed, polluted or damp sites.

This small to medium-sized pink blossom tree not only produces beautiful flowers it also has emerald green leaves that protect the maturing fruit which ripens in autumn. They are also a firm favorite for birds, making them great for biodiversity.

Flowering Cherry Cheals Weeping trees

The Flowering Cherry Cheals Weeping tree, also known as Prunus Kiku-shidare Sakura is a small tree that blossoms lovely double rose pink flowers in the spring and in the autumn the foliage turns to a lovely orange-red before falling. A low-maintenance tree that doesn’t require a lot of pruning.

Prunus Cheal’s Weeping tree weeps gracefully down to the floor (hence the name) and is best placed on a sunny lawn or patio but can also work in a container.  This is the perfect statement tree for bringing spring colour to your garden.

Spring flowering shrubs

There are also a variety of different flowering shrubs that are perfect for bringing colour to your garden this spring.

Charles Joly Lilac Shrub

Syringa vulgaris ‘Charles Joly’ Lilac shrub is a medium-sized deciduous spring shrub with dark green. heart-shaped leaves and deep, red-purple flowers that blossom in late spring or early summer and last around 3-4 weeks. The pretty purple flowers stand out well against the green foliage and are guaranteed to make a dramatic display in any garden.

The blossoms also release a lovely sweet fragrance so as to get the full benefit plant close to a window or patio area to smell the sweet scent. The Charles Joly Lilac shrub grows well in well-drained soil and sunny spot but accepts most soil types. It’s also another great shrub for attracting wildlife such as bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects.

Daphne odora shrub

Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata‘ is an attractive evergreen shrub that has a unique leaf with golden edges. In later winter/ early spring, this shrub produces sweetly fragrant, 4-lobed pink flowers. Sometimes they can even produce a red berry later in the year. Occasionally they may bloom in December however do prefer mild weather. They also like wind-free, sunny and sheltered positions as they aren’t particularly hardy.

Daphnes are slow-growing shrubs that usually grow to around 4-6 feet in height making them compact shrubs. This makes it suitable for patio and container planting and good for smaller gardens.

Forsythia Shrub

This deciduous spring flowering tree-like shrub produces beautiful golden yellow flowers that open earlier in the year to provide lovely spring colour and brighten your garden. The Forsythia shrub ‘Oleaceae’ makes an excellent hedge and is suitable for most positions in a garden as they are very hardy and can cope with colder areas.

It is also great for attracting bees and wildlife and is tolerant of most soil types making it an easy shrub to care for.

Camellias

They produce a spectacular display of blooms earlier in the year and come in a variety of different colours. Camellias Senorita produces a beautiful flamboyant dark pink flower that adds colour to your garden. You could choose Camellia’s contessa Lavinia Maggi these make a great asset to any garden with their white and cerise pink stripes.

There are other varieties of Camellias that can bring colour in early spring such as Camellias Ruby wedding and Camellias Donation.
