A very ornamental small tree with horizontal ascending branches. Mainly planted as a specimum, the Wedding Cake tree, Cornus controversa variegata is quite magnificent clothed in May with clusters of cream coloured flowers amid its variegated leaves. Blue black berries appear in autumn and the foliage turns a rich purple-red. A surprisingly hardy tree considering its delicate foliage, Cornus like sun or partial shade and fertile well-drained soil. Birds and wildlife benefit from the flowers and fruit. Like all trees the Cornuus will appreciate a weed, mulch and compost in spring when young.
