Description
Sugar Maples are very beautiful with a dense crown in an oval shape. Small greenish yellow flowers in groups hanging from slender stems appear in Spring producing winged seeds which mature in Autumn. The green leaves have five distinct lobes. The full glory of the tree is revealed in its wonderful autumn shades of orange and red. Sugar Maples prefer full sun but will grow in partial shade. They like deep, well-drained soil, preferably acid to slightly alkaline. While fairly drought resistant they do best in constantly moist but not wet soil. The tree is monoecious, (both reproductive organs.)
The Sugar Maple needs a decent space to flourish, with a height in maturity of about 20m x 14m. Parks or very large gardens would be suitable to plant these lovely trees and enjoy their autumn colour.
