Description

A deciduous bushy spreading shrub with clusters of five petalled red flowers in early spring with oval green leaves following giving much pleasure. Fragrant fruit which were once used in preserves appear in autumn. Fully hardy, Flowering Quinces prefer a sunny, well drained soil. For wall-trained shrubs, cut back side shoots after flowering to two or three buds and shorten growth away from the wall during growing season. Benefits from weed, mulch and feed in its early years.

 

Birds often nest in older shrubs and both birds and bees enjoy its bounty. It can be planted against a wall, including a north wall, as a free–standing shrub or in a pot where it can be kept to a manageable size with judicious pruning.
