The Hornbeam tree or Carpinus betula is native to Britain has sharply-toothed dark green leaves which turn yellow and orange in autumn. It produces vivid green catkins in spring through summer. In late September lovely clusters of winged nuts appear. It is famous for its broadleaf cover which makes it a haven for different wildlife throughout the year.

Description
Native to the south-east of England, the Hornbeam is not widely distributed, though it can be grown throughout Britain. An exceptionally hard wood, the Hornbeam had few traditional uses other than when its durability proved necessary such as for cartwheels or the cog mechanisms of windmills and watermills. Many of the ancient hornbeams that remain have been pollarded.
Fully hardy with beautiful gnarled bark, the leaves look similar to the Beech leaves. They can grow up to 30m and live for about 300 years. Like the Beech tree it keeps it leaves throughout the winter so provides shelter to birds and other wildlife and insects. It is fast-growing so useful in hedgerow and gardens as it establishes itself quickly in moist fertile soil.
