Description
The Hawthorn is a classic British tree, often appearing in hedgerows but equally at home in a garden or parklands. They can grow up to around 10–15 metres, and develop into a lovely spreading-crown with thorny branches and lobed dark green leaves. In May, its branches are transformed with clouds of creamy-white flowers, which are rich in nectar and pollen and so draw in bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Later in the year, these flowers give way to bunches of little scarlet fruits, known as haws. These are an important food source for thrushes, fieldfares, and other songbirds throughout autumn and winter. It is hardy and tolerant of even poorer soils, it can grow even with pollution, and exposed coastal winds. Its dense growth makes it ideal for hedging and wildlife shelter.
Traditionally believed to guard against evil and bring protection, the Hawthorn is considered sacred in Celtic and Roman culture, associated with fertility and renewal. Today, it continues to be valued for its versatility, seasonal beauty, and the vital role it plays in supporting biodiversity.
