How to choose the right tree for your garden

Start with your space

Choosing a tree starts with the space you have. Think about the tree’s mature height and spread, not just its size when you buy it. For smaller gardens, look for compact, slow-growing or naturally narrow varieties, and consider whether you’re planting in the ground or a large container.

It’s also worth looking around the planting spot. Keep future growth in mind and avoid planting too close to buildings, walls, paths or drains.

What would you like from your tree?

Trees can do so much more than add height to a garden. Think about what you’d most like to enjoy – beautiful spring blossom, autumn colour, home-grown fruit, welcome shade or more wildlife.

You don’t need a large garden to enjoy a tree. Many smaller varieties can be grown successfully in a large pot or container, making them ideal for patios and courtyards.
