Apple Trees: Grow Your Own Fruit and Enjoy the Best of Autumn

Apple trees are one of the most useful fruit trees for a British garden. They provide beautiful blossom for pollinating insects in spring, leafy cover through summer and, of course, a crop of apples in late summer and autumn.

Apple trees can work in surprisingly small spaces too. Choose a dwarf or compact rootstock and you can grow an apple tree in a smaller garden or even a large container.

They’re hardy, long-lived and, once established, relatively straightforward to care for. For a garden that provides food, wildlife value and seasonal interest, an apple tree is a very good choice.

If you like a richly flavoured apple, Herefordshire Russet is well worth considering.

This variety produces small to medium-sized apples with distinctive golden russeted skin and a rich, aromatic flavour reminiscent of Cox, with a slightly honeyed character. The fruit is excellent for eating fresh and also useful for juicing.

It is a productive, hardy and disease-resistant apple tree, with fruit generally ripening in early October. The tree has an attractive, well-spurred shape, combining good fruit production with ornamental value.

Despite its name, Herefordshire Russet is a relatively modern British variety, bred by Hugh Ermen in Kent from Cox’s Orange Pippin and Golden Delicious.

It is available on different rootstocks, including options suitable for smaller gardens and larger containers.

There are lots of apple varieties to choose from, and the best one isn't necessarily the most familiar name. Think about how much space you have, when you want the apples to ripen, whether you want to eat them fresh or cook with them, and whether you need a self-fertile variety.

Rootstock is important too, as it determines the eventual size of the tree. A dwarf rootstock can be ideal for a small garden or patio, while a more vigorous tree can make a wonderful feature in a larger garden or orchard.

Most apple trees prefer a sunny position and fertile, well-drained soil. Keeping the area around the base clear of weeds and watering well during dry spells will help your tree establish successfully.

And don't forget that an apple tree isn't just about the apples. The spring blossom provides an important source of food for bees and other pollinators, while the fruit can benefit birds and other garden wildlife. Planting fruit trees is one small way of creating a garden that works for both people and nature.
