Description
The Flowering Cherry Prunus ‘Amanogawa’, also known as the “Flagpole Cherry,” is one of the finest ornamental cherries for smaller gardens, with its narrow columnar shape. It typically only grows to around 6 metres tall with only 2 metres spread after 20 years, making it perfect for courtyards, driveways, or as a vertical accent in mixed borders.
In late April to May, it bursts into slender peaks of pale pink blossoms that are slightly fragrant and adored by pollinators and bees. The fresh green foliage is tinged with bronze before maturing to deep green through summer, then into red and orange colours in autumn. This Flowering Cherry is fully hardy and easy to maintain, the ‘Amanogawa’ thrives in full sun and well-drained fertile soils. It tolerates clay, loam and sandy ground just as long as it is not waterlogged. It does require a little pruning such as removing crossing and/or damaged branches in mid-summer. Its vertical form and delicate blossom lend elegance and structure to gardens, and its hardiness ensures it performs reliably across the UK.
A symbol of grace and longevity, this lovely flowering charry cultivar is particularly valued for combining strong architectural form with soft, romantic flowering displays.
