Description
The Beech is often core to native hedgerow but is a lovely stand-alone tree with leaves that often remain throughout the winter. Do remember to prune in the spring and autumn months to maintain the shape and height you would like. The Beech tree is one of most classic British deciduous trees found across parks, gardens and woodland. The smooth bark is greyish and the leaves are a lovely lime green which darken slightly with age. In April and May the male catkins hang on long stalks, whilst the female catkin flowers look like they are paired in a cup.
Beech grow to a height of 40m with a beautiful domed head. They give protection to smaller species of trees and shrubs and are a very important habitat for all sorts of wildlife. They prefer a drier, free-draining soil such as chalk, limestone and light loams, but will grow in most soils.
