Herefordshire Russet is noted for its abundant cropping that ripens in October. The apples are small to medium fruit with golden russet skin and a delicious rich aromatic flavour, similar to a Cox. Good for juicing too. Easy to grow, very hardy, and disease resistant.
Russet apple trees are well-spurred trees, well-shaped, and fairly vigorous. Pretty as well as productive, Herefordshire Russet are available on two different rootstocks with one able to be grown in a large pot on a patio.
History: Despite its name, Hereford Russet is a modern variety bred by Hugh Ermen in Kent in 2002. Parentage Cox’s Orange Pippin x Golden Delicious.
