Rose – Gertrude Jekyll

The gardener’s favourite is the Gertrude Jekyll Rose. It’s an old rose hybrid and it’s been voted twice as the nation’s favourite rose! It blooms fragrant, sensational pink flowers all summer which open into a soft rounded rosette shape. It performs best on moist, fertile soil and does not require constant sun. However, a good bout of sunshine each day would be enough to work its magic.

Gertrude Jekyll Rose Shrubs are reliable, versatile and more than anything else, a pleasure to have in any garden. They can even be grown as a short climber up to 2.4m! If you want to impress some visitors, this is one way to go about it. And they are a glorious scented rose to be picked and arranged in a bowl in the home.

 

Lavender

Since ancient times, Lavender has in fact been known for it’s soothing and relaxing fragrance, as well as being able to repel insects. (Let’s give an applause for Lavender just for a minute).

Lavender botanical name is Lavandula and it is a shrub that produces beautiful scented blue or lavender coloured flowers amongst fragrant silver or green foliage. Lavender shrubs mostly thrive in a sunny border or in pots so they are happiest when they receive the sun they so rightfully deserve in order to flourish.

All types of Lavenders are a great asset to any garden, providing fragrant blue, purple or lilac flowers throughout the summer. Lavender helps our butterflies, bees, and bumblebees. It is recommended that they be pruned after flowering each year in order to keep them compact and looking their best. Abelia Grandiflora

Abelia Grandiflora is a relatively small shrub featuring pink flowers and dark green leaves. It is long flowering and from June onwards, it produces fragrant trumpet-like flowers on arching branches. These last all through summer, adding even more beauty and colour to your garden.
They boast reliable performance and interesting foliage, which is one of the main reasons they became so popular.

If you’re looking for a shrub to grow anywhere in the garden, Abelia shrubs are your match made in heaven, although with their lovely fragrance near the house is best. With little maintenance, all you have to do is sit back and watch as it blooms.

 

Philadelphus Manteau d’Hermine

Our Philadelphus shrub is Manteau d’Hermine. It has gloriously scented double creamy white flowers and delicate pale green ovate leaves. We’re not surprised it was awarded the award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society. We had to include this gem on our summer shrubs list.

It is a popular garden shrub that’s easy to maintain and grow which is a bonus. It’s happy to grow and thrive in most conditions so you can plant it wherever you please. Although, it does like a bit of sun or partial sun.

 

Viburnum Tinus

The Viburnum Tinus shrub is one of the most popular evergreens that produces clusters of small, creamy white and pink budded flowers – these bloom over a long period of time usually in late winter and spring. After flowering, small blue-black berries make their appearance.
This type of shrub is often grown in a mixed border or in pots on patios. It also makes a wonderful hedge.

It requires little or no pruning unless you want a shaped shrub such as a standard which should be done very lightly in early September but other than that, you can simply appreciate the beauty and charm it brings to your garden.
