Hazel brings a little cheer to the garden while much is still sleeping, with dangling golden catkins in late winter. Fresh green, softly rounded leaves follow in spring, turning yellow in autumn.
Its hazelnuts ripen around September — lovely for eating or baking, if the squirrels leave you any! They also feed birds and small mammals, while its bushy branches offer shelter for wildlife, including our much-loved dormice.
A lovely native choice for a mixed hedge or woodland corner, Hazel can be trimmed or coppiced to manage its size and encourage fresh growth. It’s fully hardy and enjoys sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil.
