The Wild Cherry tree is one of the most striking of Britain’s native trees, capable of reaching heights of 25–30 metres and living for up to 60 years. In spring, its smooth reddish bark and shiny green leaves are accompanied by a stunning display of scented white flowers. The blossom is produced in clusters which attract bees and other insects. By late summer, these flowers mature into small red-purple cherries. These attract and provide food for birds and small mammals, they can also be used in preserves and traditional liqueurs. In autumn, the Wild Cherry tree leaves change colour into intense shades of orange, red, and gold before falling for the winter.
Its wood, which is fine-grained and a lovely reddish-brown, has long been popular for cabinet-making and furniture. The Wild Cherry tree grows best in moist, well-drained soil and prefers a sunny, sheltered position, though it can tolerate a range of conditions. It is often used in woodlands to establish structure and diversity. The Wild Cherry tree is admired for its varying seasonal brilliance, and is one of the most ornamental and ecologically valuable native trees to plant in gardens and landscapes.
