The Golden Weeping Willow (Salix × sepulcralis ‘Chrysocoma’) is widely considered one of the most beautiful and hardy weeping trees in Britain. A hybrid which was introduced around 1800, it combines the elegance of the classic Babylonian willow with the resilience of the native British white willow. This medium to large tree typically reaches 12–15 metres in height with a broad crown of sweeping, drooping branches with a spread of about 10 metres. It produces slender golden-yellow shoots which turn into long leaves that emerge fresh green in spring and take on a golden shimmer in summer. The leaves remain on the tree until late in the year, providing an extended season of beauty. In April, catkins appear and usually bears both male and female flowers on the same branch. The Golden Weeping Willows flourishes in sunny positions and prefers moist or wet soils. Fast-growing and vigorous, this tree benefits from occasional pruning every few years to refresh growth and maintain shape.
Beyond their ornamental value, willows traditionally have centuries of folklore symbolising healing, love, and protection, and are often associated with the moon and water. A tree of enchantment and resilience, the Golden Weeping Willow remains a timeless favourite when planted at the edges of lakes, rivers, or ponds, where their reflections double their presence.
