The native Blackthorn tree is a deciduous thorny and bushy tree that is generally found in hedgerows. It is one of the first trees to flower in spring with tiny saucer-shaped pale pink flowers from March. In late August they produce small blue-black sloe-berries. These sloe berries can be used to make slow gin. Notoriously hardy and drought resistant, they make an excellent addition to a hedge.

The Blackthorn tree is a notably hardy shrub. Traditionally found in hedgerows, it can be planted in most soils and can survive periods of drought that destroy other hedge plants. Especially relevant after the summer we have just had. This sturdy little tree adores full sun, so do try to pick a sunny spot when planting. The Blackthorn is a hardy shrub as it tolerates exposure to cold well too. Makes a good protective hedge with its thorny branches. The berries are beneficial to birds and other wildlife.
The fruit, called a “sloe” are black with a purple waxy bloom. These berries ripen in autumn, and are traditionally harvested in October or November after the first frosts. Sloes are small, with a bitter flavour when fresh. The berries are the essential ingredient for making Sloe Gin.
A recipe for SLOE GIN
Allow 1lb of sifted white sugar to 1lb of sloes. Prick the sloes and roll them in the sugar. Fill your bottles half full of sloes, and then pour in the gin till it reaches the top. Keep in a cool dark place. Do not uncork the bottle for at least six months. The longer you leave it the better it will be!
