Often described as the ”new Cox”, Christmas Pippin is fast-growing and fully hardy and prefers deep rich loamy soil so copes well in our British climate. A small tree reaching about 2 metres by 2 metres, therefore suitable for a small garden or large container. It is disease resistant which combined with its self-fertility makes it an especially easy to grow, even for beginners.
Regular pruning in winter keeps it productive and shapely. Planting as a bare root tree during the dormant season allows the roots to establish deeply before spring growth begins, ensuring a stronger and healthier tree. ‘Christmas Pippin’ is both ornamental and fruitful, bringing beauty and flavour to any garden.
Position: Full sun Soil: Deep rich loamy soil Habit: Straight stemmed with a bushy crown Flowering period: Spring Fruit: Late summer or autumn Hardiness: Fully hardy Rootstock: M27 Wildlife: Blossom for bees, fruit for birds and small mammals Store & ripen in a cool, dry place: good until January.
History: The Christmas Pippin tree was originally found close to the M5 motorway in Somerset by Geffrey Rowson in 2003. It is assumed that the seedling grew because there were old orchards previously there.
Bareroot
The tree is watered before being carefully packed by one of our experienced staff on site. It comes in a cardboard box lined with straw. (We try to use as much recycling material as possible) The box is addressed to the customer or a specified name and address and sent out overnight delivery to arrive on requested dates.
Please note the size of the tree that you are ordering, as our trees are provided for our clients to plant themselves, which may appear at a small size rather than the fully grown tree as shown in the photos. To find out more information, please visit our Delivery & Returns page.
